It was brought to my attention that I seem to have invented the term “paleopiracy”. Just to be formal about these things, I present an official definition:
pa‧le‧o‧pi‧ra‧cy / “pey-lee-oh-PAHY-ruh-see” / noun
: the piratic activity of some former period of geologic time; especially : the study of our pirate ancestors created by the Flying Spaghetti Monster
- pa‧le‧o‧pi‧rat‧ist / “pey-lee-oh-PAHY-ruh-tist” / noun
- pa‧le‧o‧pi‧ra‧tol‧o‧gy / “pey-lee-oh-pahy-ruh-TOL-uh-jee” / noun
- pa‧le‧o‧pi‧ra‧tol‧o‧gist / “pey-lee-oh-pahy-ruh-TOL-uh-jist” / noun
- pa‧le‧o‧pi‧rat‧ic / “pey-lee-oh-pahy-RAT-ik” / adjective
- pa‧le‧o‧pi‧rat‧i‧cal‧ly / “pey-lee-oh-payh-RAT-ik-uh-lee” / adverb

Nifty.
I have two quips however. If we’re following the Merriam-Webster:
1) The adjective form of pirate is piratical.
2) The phrase after an ‘especially’ in a definition usually contains an entire, enclosed definition in itself, not a clarification. See the 4th definition of monster for an example (woefully, Flying Spaghetti Monster isn’t defined yet).

I used the word “piratic” in our article on Piracy and tropical cyclones (the PARROT model–piratic activity realization rate of oceanic tendencies). Also, “piratic” was independently defined in Urban Dictionary and is used various places online.
I updated the definition to fit the ‘especially’ convention, though.

paleopirates are “cooler” than paleoninjas.
